Electromotion

Hailing from the City Of Angels, Samo Sound Boy is here to remind you of the power of simplicity. OK, so the beats are rather complex and textured synth-heavy house music, but its the power of the repetitive vocal hooks that grab my attention.

The music grabs me in the same way that Moby’s did, there’s real emotive tension in each song on his debut album « Begging Please » which you can stream here. The whole album is about the disillusion of a relationship “Begging Please is a story about the last couple years of my life, told best way I know how,” – he told Fact Mag. “The idea that dance music could be considered one noted or lacking in depth has never made sense to me. I think the very simple way it builds up and down is so fundamentally reflective of living in the world,” he continues. “What’s dark and brooding can give way to the most ecstatic moments, all because one small thing is added or subtracted.”

Please do your ears a favour and get emotional with my two stand out tracks, title track « Begging Please » and « You Come For Me » below.

All Hail Altrice

Introducing Altrice , a young producer from Tucson, a city far south in Arizona, on the cusp of touching Mexico. I was Introduced to Altrice by Caribou , one year ago he won a remix competition for Caribou’s  » Sun « , and a week or so ago, Caribou shared a new remix of » Our Love « , and I Had Not Heard a song quite like it .

He has His own style, I find it difficulty order to figure it out what it is that separates him from other producers. There’s definitely happening some experimental industrial sounds, crackles, a slightly under-produced vibe, he is just as comfortable intelligent remixing dance music as he is with hip hop. His sound is very refreshing regardless and I would love to hear a conceptual EP some time soon!

Keeping It Breezy

The hip-hop world has had a bit of a shake-up recently, with Kendrick Lamar releasing the most streamed debut album of all time on Spotify – « To Pimp A Butterfly », and Paul McCartney hopping on some Kanye West records, which is still an acquired taste to both fans of Kanye and fans of The Beatles.

Speaking of Kanye, some of you may recognise Allan Kingdom from when he jumped on stage with Kanye & a mob of the UK’s new wave of Grime MC’s (and Skepta who’s already a hallmark in that scene) and warbled his hook on the rather obnoxiously watershed-unfriendly track « All Day« .

Some of you may, however know Allan as an artist of his own right, his debut album « Future Memoirs » made waves in the rap blog-osphere, featuring a fantastically mellow-soul vibe record « Wavey » alongside fellow Minnesotan Spooky Black.

His newest release « Keep It Easy » shows that although he isn’t scared to be a little whacky on the vocals, he can still reign it in a little bit and keep the sound accessible to a more untrained ear.

What’s promising about Allan Kingdom is he isn’t at all afraid of getting a bit strange, stylistically and lyrically and this is what the rap world definitely needed. The way he bops on the video for « Achilles » is a personal highlight.

FKA Biggie

Had you have told me someone was going to merge these two together, I’d have spat my coffee in your face and laughed. Some absolute DUDE called TerryUrban has made it happen, and it really works!

My only complaint is he didn’t call the project « Twiggie Smalls », but who cares when this mix of Notorious B.I.G and FKA Twigs sounds so good!

Enjoy!

Journey Music

Ever since Tycho came out with their beautiful album « Dive« , I’ve had a real yearning for more of that kind of lo-fi electronic « journey » music. Something that you can just put on in the car stereo, it stays in the background, isn’t too overpowering but is always there, tumbling along being all lovely.

Nick Leng sprung upon me, he obviously has a real talent for making that kind of melody that is neither happy or sad, his latest offering « Tunnels and Planes » flutters between minor and major and brings you up and down quickly and gently, like a really soft, warm wave. The song starts really calm, it eases you in and then develops with a stunning hail-stone like pattering which eventually helps form the rhythm.

Without getting too poetic, I want people to put this song at the forefront of their mind, before then using it as a musical seasoning to whatever activity it may be, I can imagine cycling through a park, going for a run, driving through long sweeping country roads with the sun beaming through the trees, even something as mundane as doing the ironing. All of the above and more will be heightened with this soft, scenic song.

Sad dance music.

A Dutch producer under the name Piet Row has just sprung up on my ears, and has brought a whole new EP along with him for the ride, « You’re Not Alone Anymore ». This EP is filled with emotional electronic music, it lifts you up but in a humbling way.

The standout track to me is « Shimmer », this song is beautifully crafted, the melody is slightly sinister at the start, when the vocal comes in you’re really not sure which direction the song is going to take. It’s emotive, it’s humbling, and most importantly the song isn’t forceful, you can mellow out to it, but you could also jump straight up and dance, especially towards the end when the epic choir melodies kick in over the pumping snare.

If, like me, you really miss those old Moby tracks, then you should definitely pour yourself a green tea, put those headphones on and embrace your raw emotions with this.

Funked up flute flex.

Introducing Lew: Where to begin with this track by the ever so e « Lew » sive (see what I did there?) band/producer? If I had my head put on a guillotine and was asked at blade-point to describe the song in three words, they’d be: effortless, floaty, growing (then I’d pass out because I couldn’t believe someone was willing to kill me over the description of a song). It’s such a simple track if you break it apart, a strange bouncy flute-synth, little harp-esque ad-libs plucking over the simple womps and slaps of the repetitive beat in the background.

The vocals really lend themselves to the beat. In the politest and most positive way possible, the vocals are slightly bored, as though they’ve all been singing the song all day and had to do that last take at 9am and just simply couldn’t be arsed any more, because they had left their electric blanket on at home and were so excited to get back in bed. But that’s cool, they’re effortless and they just really ease along with the general vibe in the background. It takes me to a simple, happy place.

Sure, this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it screams « cool », or at least, my idea of it. Listen for yourselves.

Going crazy for Garren

Sometimes you just end up in a weird part of the internet and you’re like « I can’t decide if I’m enjoying this video of a dog making out with a pumpkin ». But there’s something so beautiful about the fact you can meander around, clicking related link, after related link and find something so special you’re like « actually, wow! ».

This is what happened when I stumbled accross this great track by Garren, I was going about my daily task of finding new tunes, sometimes you struggle for days to find a jam that really hits you (especially with all of this regurgitated « EDM » that’s circling the major blogs at the moment.

« Wanna Be There » is a perfect mix of hip-hop, soul beats, there are definite links to similar artists like Flume etc, but what I love about this track, is it’s rather scattily produced, and that is what is so charming about it, it’s a real head nodder.
